A mother-to-be working as a waitress at a Phoenix restaurant received an early Christmas present from a stranger earlier this week when one of her customers left her a $900 tip on a $61 bill.

Sarah Clark, 29, is expecting her first child to arrive soon after the new year. Her due date is January 8, and until then she is trying to work as many hours as possible at the Pita Jungle before she goes on maternity leave.

Meanwhile, her fiancé is undergoing surgery this week to treat a leg injury. Both will soon be unable to work, making money tight with a baby on the way. “Me being on maternity leave and him being out of work, we’re not going to be making any income,” she explains.

So when Clark received a $900 tip from a patron at the Pita Jungle earlier this week, she was equal parts joyous and stunned. “You always hear about these happening, but you never expect to be the recipient of it,” Clark said. “It’s a huge, huge help for me and my family.”

Clark says she has talked to the customer, who is also pregnant, about her situation before, but never thought she would show such generosity. “I couldn’t believe what I was looking at at first because it’s such a high amount,” Clark said. “Nine-hundred dollars is a lot of money. And it took a while for it to set in. Once it did, I cried for a little while.”

The tip came with a note that read: “This is God’s money — He gave it to us so we could give it to you. God bless.” Clark says by the time she looked at the check and realized the tip that was left, the customer had already left the restaurant with her take-out order.

Clark has been a server and bartender at the Pita Jungle for seven years, and while she says her patrons have always treated her well, she never expected this.

“I don’t know if she really understands how much this is going to help us this season,” said Clark, who just wants the unnamed customer to know how much she appreciates her generosity.
