The sports world is in shock following Monday night’s plane crash in Colombia that killed 75 people associated with the Brazilian soccer club Chapecoense. The team was set to play the first leg of the final of the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday.

In the aftermath of the crash, the Colombian team they were scheduled to play, Atletico Nacional, is insisting that the cup trophy be given to Chapecoense.

Following the devastating crash that yielded just six survivors, all soccer matches throughout South America have been postponed until further notice. Atletico Nacional has also made a request to the South American Soccer Federation (Conmebol) to award the trophy to Chapecoense out of respect to the victims.

“Atletico Nacional asks Conmebol that the title of South America be given to Chapecoense,” the club said in a statement. “Pain overwhelms our hearts and invades our thinking in mourning.”

“The accident of our football brothers, Chapecoense, will mark us for life and will leave an indelible mark on Latin-American and world football,” the statement continued.

“After being very worried about the human part, we thought about the competitive aspect and we want to publish this statement in which Atletico Nacional ask Conmebol to give the title of Copa Sudamericana be given to the Chapecoense as an honorary award for this great loss, and in posthumous homage to the victims of the fatal accident that impute our sport. For our part, and forever, Chapecoense are champions of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana.”

The title going to Chapecoense provides little comfort to the loved ones of everyone lost in the plane crash, as well as the few players who survived or were not on the flight, but there’s no denying it is a touching and meaningful gesture on behalf of Atletico Nacional.

Finally, everyone should watch the video below. It is a video of the Chapecoense players celebrating in their locker room after earning a place in the finals of the Copa Sudamericana. The video shows a most glorious moment for the club prior to an unspeakable tragedy.
