Husband Giving Kidney To Wife for 20th Anniversary

Scott Chafian and his wife, Cindy, have been married for close to 20 years, and for their anniversary, Scott is giving Cindy a gift that with any luck will give the couple 20-plus more years together.

On January 24, one day before their 20th anniversary, Scott is scheduled to donate one of his kidneys to Cindy. Since her 20’s she has suffered from polycystic kidney disease, a disease that causes cysts to grow in her kidneys that interfere with kidney function.

Scott says it has been difficult watching his life get sicker over the years, making the decision to donate his kidney an easy one.

“It’s so hard to take to see your wife that way,” he says. “It’s such a simple decision because you see the person you love so much just brought literally to their knees.”

Six years ago, the couple learned that they were a match for organ donation, a rarity among married couples since they obviously don’t share any lineage.

However, at the time, Cindy declined to take her husband’s kidney, saying she wasn’t ready. But after years of surgeries that served as merely a stop-gap for her condition, Cindy took a “turn for the worse” last year and finally decided she was ready to accept her husband’s gracious gift.

“I hit kind of rock bottom and I looked at him and I said, ‘OK, I’m ready,'” Cindy recalls. A few days before Christmas, the couple learned the date of their surgery, at which time Cindy admits that she broke down and cried.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support the couple, as neither will be able to work while they recover from the surgery. Cindy is also spending her time before the surgery trying to raise awareness to the importance of organ donation.

“He is literally going to give me life,” says Cindy. “What he’s doing for me and what other organ donors can do for other people is to really give them their life back and there’s no words that could express how special that is.”
